Watch The Moment This Terrified Shelter Dog Learns To Trust Again

 As co-founder of The Healing Hero Project, an organization dedicated to pairing veterans with rescue animals, Lauren Cook has met many fearful shelter dogs. Yet when Cook first saw Benny at a Texas kennel, the animal lover couldn’t help but feel a special connection to the pup.


“He was so scared and unsure. There was something about him that captured my heart right away,” Cook said in a video for The Dodo.



Cook quickly agreed to foster Benny. The anxious boy required a lot of love and patience, but fortunately he found a sweet spot. When Benny began taking treats from Cook’s hand, the dog lover knew they were on the right track.


“That was a huge breakthrough,” Cook said.



A couple of days later, Benny let Cook rub his ears, which Cook realized was his favorite thing to do. From there, Benny began asking for pets and playtime almost constantly. “The puppy who used to hide in his kennel suddenly became a social butterfly,” Cook said.


“It got to the point where if I stopped [petting him], he would tell me he wasn’t done and he needed more affection.”


Soon, it was time for Benny to begin his transition to a forever home. Wearing a beautiful blue scarf, Benny began meeting potential adopters.


“The best part about this whole journey is that Benny is getting his happy ending,” Cook said. “I’ve seen such a huge change in him.”




Finally, Benny connected with the perfect match.


“I’m so happy to share the best update Benny has ever had with you guys. He’s going to his forever home,” Cook said in an Instagram video.
