Little dog trapped in pool of tar kept barking until someone heard him
Anyone who has ever owned a dog will know that they have many ways of communicating with a human in different situations.
Their behavior changes depending on whether they are hungry or angry, happy or hurt, just as the sounds they make also vary.
That's why when a group of workers near the town of Suwalki, Poland, heard a dog barking incessantly in a remote wooded area, they knew they had to investigate. They decided to follow the audio and see what it was like, and we're so thankful they did...
What they found was enough to render me speechless. There, lying in a puddle of tar, unable to escape, was a dog in desperate need of rescue.
The workers contacted Joanna Godlewska, of the Niczyje Animal Foundation. I went straight to the scene, unsure of what to expect and worried about it.
“When I finally got there and saw a dog lying in the tar, my eyes teared up,” Godlewska told The Dodo.
It is thought that the dog may have been warming up and lying in the tar without knowing it would become a snare.
How long the dog was stuck is anyone's guess, but one thing is for sure, he wouldn't have made it on his own. His spirit was quickly fading away when he was discovered, and if it weren't for the workers, he would definitely have died.
Godlewska and a team of firefighters managed to get the dog off the tar, first by cutting off sections of his fur and then using cooking oil to thin out the rest. She thinks pleasing him was obvious.
The dog was then taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment for exhaustion.
After a few chaotic hours, in which the remaining tar was removed from his body, he was examined. Fortunately, it turned out that he had good general health.
"He's feeling a lot better," Godlewska said.
The dog, named Varsik, still has some recovery ahead of him, but for now he is surrounded by people who care for him and will work until he is in a loving and safe home.
