At the BARC animal shelter in Houston, Texas, hope of re-establishing an 11-month-old puppy's faith in humans is fading fast. Scarlett's foster parents intervened two weeks ago to save the pup from death, but have since admitted to their inexperience with an extremely fearful and withdrawn dog.
Scarlett arrived at the shelter as a stray on May 10, 2023. She weighed 45 pounds and was described as a Labrador Retriever mix. When I first got to the shelter, she cowered into a corner and refused treats, cowering and cowering whenever anyone approached her.
The pup was scheduled to die on May 15, but BARC sitter stepped up and rescued her just in the nick of time.
And she's back. It's not Scarlett's fault. She has no idea that humans could be so kind at this time. An experienced foster parent is required, someone who knows how to take care of dogs like Scarlett.
